"Move quickly if you are a Bandol fan as the sublime and concentrated 1989 Bandol Vieilles Vignes is just arriving to America's shores. It is a wine of extraordinary richness, with a perfume redolent with scents of minerals, licorice, black fruits, truffles, and herbs, and a massive, rustic, phenomenally concentrated style. It is the essence of the Mourvedre grape. With its searing tannin level, this personality-filled, multi-dimensional wine should provide knock-out drinking for 30+ years. Readers are advised to cellar it for 4-5 years, allowing some of the tannin to melt away. This is an awesome effort from one of the most idiosyncratic winemaking estates in Europe! When this estate does everything right it produces the most profoundly complex wines of Bandol . . . . Since the mid-eighties the quality has been exhilarating. I have long been a believer in the wines of Bandol, and this bottling from ChĂąteau Pradeaux, from an unquestionably great vintage, makes a persuasive case for this appellation."
