"The 1985 Gallina is a stellar bottle of wine that is just now beginning to reach its apogee. The bouquet is deep, pure and glorious, as it delivers notes of cherries, red plums, orange zest, woodsmoke, earth, dried roses, spicy soil tones and incipient notes of gamebird. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and very sweet in the mid-palate, with an almost sappy core, bright acids, and with extended air, still a bit of firm tannin to resolve on the very long, complex and soil-driven finish. This is a beautiful bottle of Barbaresco that is still on its way up, and will be even more stunning to drink with another half dozen years of bottle age. It is inherently not quite as refined as the Giacosa Santo Stefano, but it is nonetheless a simply brilliant bottle of wine."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
Produces Nebbiolo of slightly more elegance and approachability than neighboring Barolo, offering perfume, finesse and firm structure.
Produces pale but powerfully tannic and perfumed reds with tar, rose and cherry notes. The grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco, it is among the most age-worthy in the world.
