The 1993 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Case Basse is sensational. A spectacular bouquet of tobacco, ginger, soy, roasted meat, black cherry, plum, and toast scents is followed by layer upon layer of fruit, sweet tannin, super ripeness, and gorgeous complexity and symmetry. This is an exceptionally complex, full-flavored Brunello di Montalcino that can be drunk now, or cellared for 10-15 years. This idiosyncratic but brilliant effort is not for everybody (few can afford it), but it represents a wine of great originality and complexity.

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
The heartland of Sangiovese, producing Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and the Cabernet-influenced 'Super Tuscans' of the coast. Its wines balance bright acidity, savory structure and cellar-worthiness.
A powerful, age-worthy Sangiovese from the warm hills of Montalcino, requiring extended aging and prized for depth and longevity.
