Vermouth from Italy, Italy

"This dark, mysterious vermouth is rich, complex and layered, boasting aromas of mint and other herbs, plums and figs, reminiscent of Madeira. The rich flavors are hard to pin down: cocoa, red wine, almonds, bitter marmalade, hints of spice and toffee all play across the palate, finishing with a bracing bitter edge. Durin Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente 2017, 0.75L
Pigato from Riviera Ligure di Ponente, Liguria

"Pigato is considered the “prince” of Ligurian white wines, a coastal grape that is the natural pair with Mediterranean cuisine and fresh seafood. Originally from Greece, the Pigato grape made its way to Liguria in the 1600s, and is believed to be a cousin of the white grape Vermentino. Today it is almost exclusively associated with and cultivated along the Ligurian Riviera on the northwest coast of Italy, not far from the cliffs and wandering paths of Cinque Terre." Contratto Millesimato Metodo Classico Brut 2012, 0.75L
Chardonnay / Pinot Noir / Pinot Meunier from Lombardia, Lombardia

"A blend of 80% Pinot Nero and 20% Chardonnay, the 2012 Metodo Classico Millesimato Pas Dosé ages on the yeasts for five years. Riddling is done by hand. This is a mid-weight sparkler that borders closely on being full-bodied. The mouthfeel is beautifully creamy and rich with abundant apricot, honey and sweet almond. I tasted this wine after a 30-wine flight of Barolos and Barbarescos and I cannot exaggerate how delicious and appealing this wine ultimately proved to be." 93 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"The grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards in both Canneto Pavese and the adjacent commune of Castana. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel at a low temperature and the wine is bottled at the end of winter to capture its freshness. Verdi’s Pinot Grigio is a fine, elegant wine of great balance and relatively low alcohol (11.5%)." Importer Notes, Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Ada Nada Barbera d'Alba Pierin 2016, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont

"Planted to southeast facing slopes at 200 to 350 meters altitude on limestone soils composed mostly of white marl with very little clay, the Barbera “Pierin “ blends fruit from two neighboring vineyards and bears the name of the family associate who supplied much of the old vines fruit for this wine. After the manual harvest, the grapes are pressed and de-stemmed and the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur while the wine rests in stainless steel. Once those fermentations are complete, the wine is racked into large oak casks of 30 hectoliter size where it ages for one year. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and left to recover in bottle for an additional three months before reaching the market. Approximately 6,000 bottles are produced per annum. Its character is muscled and exuberant with a rustic shrug of its broad shoulders." Importer Notes, Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Cocito Barbaresco Baluchin Riserva 2010, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont

"I tasted this wine at the La Spinetta winery because vintner Ezio Cocito is a close friend of Giorgio Rivetti. The 2010 Barbaresco Riserva Baluchin is an extremely precise and focused expression of Nebbiolo. The aromas are razor sharp. Cocito farms some of the highest-altitude vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation at 400 meters above sea level. I can only imagine that achieving ripeness must be a challenge in the coolest vintages. The vines are 24 years old, and therefore stable and consistent in terms of their output. The vineyard measures a mere 1.2 hectares and only 4,000 bottles were made. Limestone soils push elegant aromas of blue violets, flint and campfire ash." 93 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Conterno-Fantino Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"The 2015 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is absolutely gorgeous. Floral, savory and intensely mineral, the 2015 captures all the signatures that make wines from this sector in Monforte so distinctive. Medium in body, focused and chiseled, the 2015 retains terrific energy, the warm, dry summer notwithstanding. There is so much to admire. The 2015 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is a wine of real class and pedigree."94 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Conterno-Fantino Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"This sample shows that the 2015 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is surely a child of its hot vintage. You really can feel the warmth in this dark and concentrated Barolo and its 15% alcohol. There is a lot of round, ripe and fruit-forward intensity here, but there is no doubting its elegance. Dark fruit notes mix with earthy tones of potting soil and dark truffle."94 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Conterno-Fantino Barolo Sorì Ginestra 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"This has a very impressive nose with ripe red cherries and plums, as well as abundant notes of sweet spice. The palate delivers a very assertive, plush and fleshy impression with a core of incredibly vibrant fruit that holds super fresh. The tannins are vibrant and the length is very impressive."97 Points James Suckling

The 2015 Barolo Sorì Ginestra shows why this site is so highly regarded. Soaring aromatics make a strong opening statement. Spice, menthol, licorice, macerated cherry, blood orange, leather and pine all fill out the wine's ample frame. Powerful, deep and layered, the Sorì Ginestra is a super-classic Conterno-Fantino Barolo. In this vintage, the tannins are especially polished, something that has not always been the case with young Sorìs. 94 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Elio Grasso Barolo Gavarini Chiniera 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"Extremely perfumed, showing lots of rose, lavender and dark-berry character. Full body with intense density and chewiness that gives the wine great structure. Lots of flavor and focus at the finish." 98 Points James Suckling

"The 2015 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is ample, full-bodied and rich on the palate, and yet retains its explosive floral lift and brightness, two of the signatures that are such calling cards of Barolos from this Monforte site. A rush of sweet red cherry, blood orange, chalk, mint and rose petal build in a super-expressive Barolo that hits so many high notes effortlessly. The Gavarini Chiniera is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it." 97 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Elio Grasso Dolcetto d'Alba Dei Grassi 2017, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Dolcetto d'Alba, Piedmont

"Gianluca Grasso tells me he became as strict as an Italian police man, a Carabinieri, when it came to leaf pulling in 2017. Vines needed as much shade as they could get in this scorching hot vintage, so he did not allow for any leaves to be thinned. Fruit for the 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba dei Grassi matured rigorously in the shade during the whole summer season. For Gianluca, this was the key to maintaining fruity intensity and freshness in this difficult vintage. Indeed, this wine is void of the jammy sensations of fruit confit and marmalade that you might expect given the record heat." 89 Points Wine Advocate

Ferrando Carema Etichetta Bianca 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Carema, Piedmont

"If there is any wine that defines the Ferrando “oeuvre” it is this one: the white label Carema. No single wine in our portfolio is more illustrative of our work than this brilliant rendition of Nebbiolo. Produced exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape planted in a series of vineyards that sit beneath Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) in a broad amphitheatre with full southern exposure overlooking the river, Dora Baltea, that runs from the snow-capped mountains south through the Valle d’Aosta into the northwestern range of Piedmont slicing the city of Ivrea in half. The vines are trained in a special way on pergola (known as “tupin” in local dialect) to obtain maximum exposure to the sun in this high altitude district and are planted to soils that are dominated by slate. The appellation of Carema is extremely small: only 16 hectares (approximately 40 acres) are planted to the vine. The Ferrando family controls 2.5 hectares of the appellation. The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested normally during the second half of October; then, they undergo a cuvaison of approximately two weeks in stainless steel before being racked into a mixture of large and small barrels for an extensive aging period of 30 to 36 months before being bottled (without filtration). By law, the Carema cannot be released before four years of aging. Production of the Carema “Etichetta Bianca” is approximately 7200 bottles per annum, two-thirds of which (4800 bottles) comes to the States. A small quantity of magnums is bottled each year at our request as well. The Carema of Ferrando reveals the most elegant and delicate and complex characteristics of the Nebbiolo grape with a surprising capacity to age. We have witnessed this wine at thirty-plus years of age displaying vibrant, seductive qualities that are simply astonishing." Importer Notes, Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Ferrando Carema Etichetta Nera 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Carema, Piedmont

"This exceptional and rare wine is produced only in the finest vintages. It comes from a special selection of grapes harvested from several particularly well-placed parcels within the appellation (frequently from the Silanc and Siei vineyard sites). Aged for at least three years prior to bottling, the “elevage” is done primarily in small barrels, only a small percentage of which are new. One hundred of the three hundred cases produced are dedicated to the US market, augmented by a small amount of magnums." Importer Notes, Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Giuseppe Mascarello Langhe Nebbiolo 2017, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont

"This wine had been bottled just a few days prior to my tasting visit. The 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo opens to a light garnet color that reflects the heat of the vintage (the Nebbiolo grape tends to produce a pale color as those temperatures increase), but the wine's appearance is due to darken and gain in color saturation as the wine spends a little more time in bottle. The bouquet is also poised to open with deeper layers of blueberry, spice and violets." 91 Points Monica Larner, Wien Advocate

La Spinetta Moscato d`Asti Bricco Quaglia 2018, 0.75L
Moscato from Asti, Piedmont

"From a 20 hectare plot of 35+ year old vines grown in calcareous and sandy soils comes this fresh and lively Moscato d’Asti. Grown at approximately 300 meters in altitude, the diurnal swing here allows for a depth of fruit balanced by clean and refreshing acidity. First released in 1977, La Spinetta’s ‘Bricco Quaglia’ Moscato d’Asti was the first ever single vineyard bottling of Moscato in Italy and the focus on expressing the unique terroir of this plot has remained ever since. Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is super-polished and elegant. Rich and ample, in the style of the year, the 2015 has quite a bit of volume, but the aromatics and silky tannins are very clearly those of Cannubi. Rose petal, sweet red cherry, blood orange, spice and mint add lovely top notes. Today, the 2015 gives the impression it will drink well early and mature at a relatively fast pace."93 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Luigi Einaudi Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"Compared to the Cannubi cru, the 2015 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is much more structured and rich. At 45 years old, these are the estate's oldest vines at work (the youngest ones are used for the Barolo Ludo), producing a tannic but nicely balanced and approachable Barolo. There are strongly present earth tones in this vintage, such as freshly tilled soil, and as it opens you'll discover more sweet spice and chocolate as well."94 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

There’s a wealth of ripe and rich fruit here that makes a convincing impression on the nose with red to darker cherries, plums and an array of fresh leaves and herbs. The palate has seamless, finely grained tannins that carry a smooth array of fresh and juicy red-cherry flavor. Really holds the finish well. 94 Points James Suckling

Marcarini Barolo La Serra 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont

"The 2015 Barolo La Serra is wonderfully silky, aromatic and refined, with all of the lift that is such a signature of this high-altitude La Morra site. Flowers, sweet red cherry, spice, tobacco and cedar are wonderfully delineated. Even more importantly, the aggressive tannins that once often penalized this wine are pretty much absent, a change Marcarini ascribes to gentler handling of the fruit during the initial part of fermentation. This is very nicely done." 93 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Monsecco Gattinara 2011, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Gattinara, Piedmont

"The 2011 Gattinara is a super-classic wine laced with the aromas and flavors Nebbiolo shows with a bit of age. Sweet tobacco, dried flowers, dried cherry, menthol, orange peel and anise give the wine its aromatic presence. Firm tannins add drive through to the finish. Further time in bottle should help those tannins soften even more. Still, the 2011 is quite attractive today." Vinous 93 Points

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2015, 0.75L
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont

"I tasted this wine after bottling but before its commercial release. The 2015 Barbaresco will hit the market on September 1st. It was scheduled to be released in October, but because Produttori del Barbaresco is already out of stock of the 2014 Barbaresco, they decided to move this release up and shorten waiting times. I mention that because you definitely don't want to pop the cork too early. The 2015 vintage opens to a visibly darker color and thicker concentration compared to recent past vintages. Next to the upcoming 2016 and 2017 editions, we can expect 2015 to be the most fruit-forward of the three. You get dark tones of plum and blackberry with dry tannins at the rear." 93 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2013, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany

Rose, wild berry, camphor and a whiff of exotic spice float out of the glass along with a hint of new leather. Radiant and loaded with finesse, the taut, elegantly structured palate delivers juicy red cherry, strawberry compote, baking spice and licorice while fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity provide balance and support. 96 Points Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

Very intense aromas of ripe dark fruit with plums and cherries, intermingled with aged meat, warm stones and sweet, dried-wood nuances. The concentrated palate has a suave and plush core with tannins building in impressive layers to hold a long, flavorful finish. Drink or hold. 96 Points James Suckling

Initially closed and shy, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva needs a little extra time in the glass before it starts to shine. The wine is made according to a very classic blueprint that prizes delicate primary fruit freshness, fully integrated tannins (nudged forward by Slavonian oak casks) and bright acidity. Fruit for this wine is sourced from 20-year-old vines that deliver the added extract and concentration worthy of a Riserva expression. This wine is impeccably balanced and radiant. It drinks beautifully straight out of the gate, however, it has the natural DNA to assure a graceful aging future. 95+ Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico 2015, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Chianti Classico, Tuscany

"The 2015 Chianti Classico is a bright and convincing wine from Barberino Val d'Elsa, one of the main comuni in the greater Chianti Classico appellation. This is a smooth and silky Sangiovese that glides clean over the palate with strength and intensity. Bright cherry, blueberry and herbal accents with wild sage and rosemary characterize the finish. Like many other wines from the 2015 vintage, there is an evident touch of cherry sweetness on the close." 92 Points Wine Advocate

Piaggia Carmignano Il Sasso 2015, 0.75L
Sangiovese / Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc / Merlot from Carmignano, Tuscany

"Piaggia's 2015 Carmignano Il Sasso is rich, ample and voluptuous in what is a very representative expression of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, tobacco and dried herbs develop in the glass, but the 2015 is all about fruit intensity and texture. There is not much subtlety here, but wow, is the 2015 gorgeous." 95 Points Antonio Galloni

San Carlo Brunello di Montalcino 2013, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany

"Good fully saturated red. Fresh, piercing aromas and flavors of strawberry, candied violet, red cherry nectar and underbrush. Very lively and bright thanks to vibrant but harmonious acidity; the long suave finish hints at alcohol-derived heat and youthfully chewy tannins, but this is a really enjoyable, easily accessible Brunello bursting with early appeal."  92 Points Vinous

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2016, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc from Bolgheri Sassicaia, Tuscany

"The 2016 Sassicaia is a wine of soaring achievement. I tasted this wine several times during the course of its creation in both barrel and bottle, and the highly deserved 100-point score you see here was enthusiastically assigned at the conclusion of a mini vertical in which I tasted and compared the 2016 vintage against 2015 (which I scored 97 points). It makes perfect sense to present these two excellent vintages in back-to-back comparison fashion because they are two of the best to emerge from Bolgheri, and indeed Tenuta San Guido, in recent memory. These are very similar vintages with long, hot summer months that fueled a long growing season. There was a bit more rain in 2016, and in analytical terms this vintage has a tad more acidity. However, the results in the glass are extraordinarily different. The 2015 vintage is exuberant, round, succulent and immediate, whereas the 2016 vintage shows pinpoint sharpness and precision (with similar grit and texture at the back). That acidity will carry it long into the future as the wine completes its slow evolutionary course. This wine is chiseled and sharp with blackberry, ripe cherry, grilled herb and barbecue spice. The aromas flow from the glass in a continuous stream and are all marked by radiant intensity. The mouthfeel is long and powerful. The crisp linearity of the wine's tannic backbone is perfectly measured to the volume and depth of the fruit flavors. To my mind, the 2016 Sassicaia stands tall next to the epic 1985 vintage that set the ultimate benchmark for vino italiano." 100 Points Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

l'Arco Chianti 2015, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany

"The grapes are picked and sorted by hand and after de-stemming and crushing, are sent in tanks for traditional vinification. Maceration on the skins for 22 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 28°C. The alcoholic fermentation lasts an average of 10 days. The wine is then racked into 30hL oak barrels where it remains for 12 months for aging and malolactic fermentation. After one year the wine is kept in steel tanks for about a month, then lightly filtered, bottled and aged for another 4 months before market release. Very intense ruby ed color. The nose is a remarkably fragrant with red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, followed by a hint of licorice and coffee. Its sweet and velvety tannins wrap around the mouth, leaving a deep feeling of freshness, making this pleasant wine fine and very elegant." Weygandt Metzler

Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2015, 0.75L
Corvina / Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc from Veneto, Veneto

"This is the most accessible and fresh red wine in the greater Giuseppe Quintarelli portfolio. The 2015 Primofiore is a blend of equal parts indigenous grapes (Corvina and Corvinone) and French grapes (Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc). Those four varieties come together with harmony to create a fresh entry-level wine that is redolent of dark fruit, wild berry and plum. This vintage shows a very happy and sunny disposition, despite the ease and informality of the fruit." 90 Points Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
