91 JG. "The 1998 Clos Vougeot from Domaine Engel is excellent, offering up a youthful nose of ripe plums, chocolate, herb tones, forest floor, just a touch of stems and a generous coating of toasty oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and beginning to show some secondary tones, with fine focus, good depth at the core, and fine length and grip on the modestly tannic finish. This is another 1998 that is beginning to drink very well right now, but which will continue to improve for a number of years. Quite impressive, and another producer who uses plenty of new wood but managed to get the wine into bottle without drying it out one bit." John Gilman, View From the Cellar, Aug 2008 |
