*** MB. "If you see any collector with this wine in his cellar, or in an auction catalogue, it might well have come from Hinton Admiral, the Meyrick estate in Hampshire, for, of the 30 dozen 'Claridge Claret No 1 Chat Latour 1881' costing 100 shillings (£,5) a dozen and 'packed May 1894,' 27 dozen remained in the original bins, untouched. An exceptionally hard, tannic wine . . . . more than deep, positively opaque; dry, a huge wine with a pungent, tannic finish. Reminded me of some 1948s. Eleven years later I tasted one from the Château at Kerry Payne's Latour tasting: a faultless old bouquet; 'a big dry wine through still tannic.'
