Pessac-Léognan: “Bordeaux’s Bastion of Value”
Arrives August 2012
With Bordeaux prices climbing seemingly into the stratosphere for en primeur items that aren’t even here or ready to drink yet, why not take advantage of this terrific line-up of ready-to-go, value-priced gems from Pessac-Léognan? Formerly known as Graves, this appellation was decreed in 1987 to more clearly define the quality of the region’s terroir. The 1986 vintage was the first to be released in conjunction with the new AOC name.
The quality/price quotient represented by the wine in this missive is superb! If you want names and star-power, the blast encompasses some of the best and the brightest currently in the game: Anne and Olivier Bernard, Daniel and Florence Cathiard along with Veronique Sanders and Phillipe Gervoson. Pessac has always delivered “bang-for-the-buck” and this brilliant selection proves the point.
These are all coming direct from Bordeaux so the provenance is great! Bordeaux-lovers take notice: these offerings are specifically geared for those who actually drink and enjoy traditionally produced, superbly aged claret. Because at the end of the day, you drink what’s in the bottle, not what’s on the bottle. Don’t miss out on any of these one-time-only selections.

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2000
Score: 90RP
“The deep ruby/purple-colored 2000's rich, complex perfume displays aromas of cedar, black cherry liqueur, melted licorice, scorched earth, tobacco, and new oak. The wine is rich, firm, tannic, concentrated, and medium to full-bodied with admirable sweetness of fruit. It is a beautiful effort that should be drinkable between 2007-2020.”

Domaine de Chevalier 1999
"A tasty, opulent 2005 from proprietress Helene Garcin, this sexy wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color followed by a sweet bouquet of licorice, black cherries, blackberries, oak, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, opulent, fleshy, and disarming, it will drink well in 2-3 years, and should age for 12-15. By the way, I have recently begun sampling my 1998 Barde-Haut, which is just emerging from its adolescent stage. It, too, is a beauty!"

Domaine de Chevalier 2007
"One of the vintage's top successes, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot exhibits a juicy, black currant, forest floor, and soil-scented nose. Layered with brilliant precision, purity, and density, it is a medium to full-bodied, elegant, intensely flavored, soft, upfront blend... It should drink well for 10-15 years."

Château Haut Bailly 2003
"One cannot say enough about the investments and commitment to quality instituted by Haut-Bailly's new American owner, Robert Wilmers, the head of the huge M&T bank conglomerate. The chateau's entire staff, headed by the talented Veronique Sanders (the granddaughter of one of the great gentlemen of Bordeaux, Daniel Sanders), reflects both enthusiasm and dedication. Powerful, fruit-driven and big, the 2003 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of lead pencil shavings intermixed with red and black currants, cherries, and forest floor. Boasting beautiful purity, medium to full body, and admirable glycerin as well as textural weight, it is an elegant, classic Bordeaux to drink between 2008-2020+."
